JUKEWORK

to Dec 21

JUKEWORK

Before Santa makes his rounds, Brooklyn’s own event series JUKEWORK is serving up something special, our final show of the year. We’re closing out the season with sweat, bass, and pure heat straight from the dance floor. Expect fast rhythms, footwork, and club energy all night long as we bring together some of our favorite DJs to end the year right.

Chelita delivers a high energy set bound to make you dance for hours. Their style brings old school rave with new school club, influenced by Detroit Techno/Electro, Latin Freestyle, Tribal, Chicago House & Latin Hard House creating a nostalgic, yet electric atmosphere.

CYBEROMANCER is a NY-based electronic artist and DJ fusing Chicago Footwork and Juke influences with a futuristic edge. Their background digital patching shapes their glitchy, algorithmic sound, while their South Side roots fuel high-energy, bass-heavy rhythms.

BROWN LIQUAH brings infectious, high-energy juke and hip-hop to the floor, keeping the vibe fast, fun, and full of bounce. Their sets pulse with rhythms and club flair, turning every mix into pure movement.

With interviews in Vogue and Dazed, DJ FREEDEM has long cemented themselves as a true New York icon and we're excited to have them headline the final JUKEWORK of the year. When they’re not tending to their plants, they’re crafting original tracks and edits that fuse jersey club, ballroom, and whatever else it takes to get your ass moving.

Composition explores the intersections of art modalities, code, and mathematics.

Composition site -  https://composition.codes

Demos & Performances:

Isidore Mohr (isdra.bandcamp.com) - Girard's Paradox: Presentation and performance of my mathematical-proof-to-music translation system Soundproof. I livecode a proof of a contradiction, which Soundproof displays as music and visuals.

Claire Wang (ig @0xclaire) - Music, Proofs, and Dependent Types (talk + demo): Discussion and demo of two projects: Rocq N Roll, which turns tactics in the Rocq Prover into music, and a domain-specific language for counterpoint using the proof assistant Lean.

Micah Fitch (https://wondering.xyz) - Polyphonotypes: A theoretical framework and tools for mapping and understanding relationships between pitch-class sets. Think *circle of fifths meets graph theory* and then they discover that they're both interested in learning more about monoidal categories (surprise!).

Brian Abelson (brian.abelson.live, ig @abelsonlive) - saysynth: Discussion and demo of a synthesizer I built on top of Mac's text-to-speech framework. You can read the documentation on the software here: https://docs.saysynth.org/saysynth.html. Recordings of the demos are here: https://abelsonlive.bandcamp.com/album/saysynth

Conversation: "Compiling" to interactive dynamic sequencers? (led by Micah Fitch)

Let's cross pollinate musical, mathematical and computer scientific perspectives.

What's the difference between a "computer program" and an "interactive, realtime dynamic sequencer?" Is there one? Why should there be? What could it look like to design a compiler meant for interpreting declarative specifications of dynamic, realtime interactive sequencers for interactive multimedia purposes and more?

How might <insert theoretical perspective> help us frame this?

The Buttonmashers (Speed dating event)

Are you tired of random encounters on dating apps, with people you have nothing in common with? Are you running out of stamina, trying to escape your situationship?

It's time for you to date someone with a mutual interest. No more explaining the interconnectivity of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy. No more baring your teeth when your date refers to the Hero of Time as Zelda. And, finally, no more sitting through conversations when somebody says "I play Candy Crush on the subway."

It's time to meet a gamer boy (man) or a gamer girl (woman), at The Buttonmashers, a speed dating experience at Wonderville. Short dates will take place at the arcade machines —you'll have just enough time to learn someone's name and whether or not you'd like to talk with them again — until the matchmaker comes over and ruins it... by bringing you another date.

Speak plainly and directly! That's the point of the event. Get their number or get rejected, it's all part of the game.

This version of The Buttonmashers will be for people who identify as men and women and are dating the opposite sex. If you don't fall under this dating demographic, stay tuned for future events!

The Fifth Annual Screening of Wizard People, Dear Reader + Mini Open VCR Night
Dec

to Dec 30

The Fifth Annual Screening of Wizard People, Dear Reader + Mini Open VCR Night

Everybody knows the last Monday of every even-numbered month belongs to the anarchist found film festival known as Open VCR Night, but once a year on the last Monday of December, we sacrifice a few hours from our unmanned VCR to bring you Wonderville's annual screening of Jacob Ford's personal 480p copy of WPDR.AVI.

What's WPDR.AVI?

WIZARD PEOPLE, DEAR READER is an unauthorized adaptation of the first Harry Potter film, in which the soundtrack is entirely replaced by Brad Neely voicing every character. It was toured and performed live in the early pre-iPhone aughts, until Warner Brothers cease and desisted it to smithereens. Now, only WPDR.AVI remains.

What's OVCRN?

Open VCR Night is usually 3 hours on the last Monday of every even month, but tonight it is the opening act. Bring some Christmas VHS tapes and get aggressive with the eject button quick—we only have 90 minutes.

Three rules:

1. BYO VHS (or borrow ours it's cool)

2. Anyone may eject, at any time.

3. If you eject, you must INSERT TAPE.

FULL LINEUP:

7:00PM – 8:30PM Miniature Open VCR Night

8:31PM – 11:00PM: Wizard People, Dear Reader

11:01PM – ??:?? Afterparty with Dean and Company

Maybe the VCR will come back open. Maybe I'll put in Spiders and Snakes, Dear Reader, the unauthorized sequel to Brad's unauthorized Potter. Maybe we'll all want to go home.

Whillakers! It'll be a ball.

Robot Karaoke

Join us for karaoke night on impossible mode as we replace the lyrics to any SONG with words from any TEXT, then try to sing the results on the spot. It all happens live, so each song has never been heard before and will never be heard again.

Our songwriting system, THE WEIRD ALGORITHM, matches each line syllable-for-syllable, so you can sing along if you know the original tune.

Request any of the 100+ songs and 50+ texts in the catalog. Sign up to sing as an individual or a group...or sit back and watch the karaoke carnage.

Past combos include:

YELP REVIEWS OF PSYCHICS to the tune of TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART

CRAIGSLIST VEHICLE ADS to the tune of TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS

NEGATIVE REVIEWS OF PROFESSORS to the tune of VAMPIRE

BERNIE SANDERS EMAIL SUBJECT LINES to the tune of DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'

Hosted by Jamie Brew and Jenn Schiffer, two tech entrepreneurs on a mission to make karaoke harder and worse.
