The less said about this particular movie. The only thing one needs to know is that Symbol is the brainchild of Hitoshi Matsumoto, one of Japan’s most celebrated comedic talents.
Released in 2009, it has sadly remained under the radar ever since, despite being one of the best comedies to hail from Japan since the turn of the century, as well as one that has universal appeal. Which in itself is a rarity; generally speaking, to understand Japanese comedies, one must have a fair bit of familiarity with Japanese culture.
Again, saying too much will ruin the film, to reiterate what the poster says: Symbol is about a man trapped in a room in which the walls are covered by tiny penises. It’s stupidly profound, as well as profoundly stupid. As we all just profound, and also just stupid.
Symbol will be screened twice, back to back; the first showing is at 8:30, with the second starting immediately after the credits have rolled.
